Welcome to Meredith Hocking's Page

I work in the following areas: All Greater St. Louis.

You can reach me at 314-401-5772.

My e-mail address is birthsister@gmail.com

I usually take 1 client per month. If I am booked for the month that you are due, I will help you find another doula who would support the choices you are making for your upcoming birth.

My training includes: I am a DONA-trained doula, and have met all the requirements for DONA certification. Each birth I attend brings new lessons, so I am constantly learning.

Here's more about my qualifications/experience:

I completed the DONA Birth Doula workshop through Barnes-Jewish in October 2006. I have been working as a staff doula at St. Elizabeth's hospital in Belleville, IL, since April 2007. In my first 6 months, I have assisted 20 women and their families on their labor journeys.
I am the mother of two boys, both vaginal, unmedicated deliveries. I breastfed both of my sons, and routinely help new moms establish breastfeeding shortly after delivery.

Here's more about my doula practice:

I believe in a woman's innate ability to birth her baby, and I support the choices she makes for her birth. Birth Sister Doula Services provides holistic labor support to women in the St. Louis Metro area - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I am particularly fond of the term "birth sister" (synonymous with "doula"), because it calls to mind the times when women were cared for during childbirth by other women – their mothers, aunts, and sisters. These women understood childbirth as a process when a woman was not only giving birth to her baby, but also giving birth to herself as a stronger woman, redefining herself as a mother. In a time when many women do not have this family support close by - or who desire more support than is available - a doula can fulfill this need to be nurtured by other women during this special time.

Because I am on staff at St. Elizabeth's and have another full-time job, I am selective in the clients I will accept right now. However, if we meet and decide it is a good match, you will have 24/7 access to me for 1 month before your due date and up to 2 weeks after delivery.

Included in my fee are the following services:

  • Minimum of 2 prenatal visits - accompany to doctor's visit, assistance with birth plan (if desired)
  • Unlimited phone and email consultations
  • Use of my lending library
  • Continuous support during labor, delivery and recovery
  • Assistance with breastfeeding (if desired)
  • Assistance with photography (if desired)
  • Postpartum follow up
  • Community resource referrals

I do not believe a woman should be denied the support of a doula because of an inability to pay. I am willing to negotiate fees and/or arrange for bartering of goods/services.
